11 Conferences and Independents
Lets take a look at how the last 17 years the Bowl Championship Series has favored all 11 Conferences and Independent Football Schools (IFS). (Including the newly selected 2008 teams too.)
ACC - 30 BCS bowl games
Big 12 - 33 BCS bowl games
Big East - 9 BCS bowl games
Big Ten - 21 Bowl games
Conference USA - 0 BCS bowl games
Independent Football Schools - 7 BCS bowl games (All Notre Dame)
Mid-American - 0 BCS bowl games
Mountain West - 2 BCS bowl games
Pac-10 - 15 BCS bowl games
SEC - 25 BCS bowl games
Sun Belt - 0 BCS bowl games
WAC - 2 BCS bowl games
Now lets assume that Notre Dame joins the Big East conference and the Independent league is gone. This leaves 6 out of the 11 conferences receiving and playing in 140 of the 144 total BCS bowl games ever played in the last 17 years. 17 years only 4 games went outside the 6 major conferences. WOW!!! If this doesn't call for a revamp I don't know what should. It is understood that not all conferences are equal, although there are undefeated teams that never get to see a BCS bowl game. For example, #9 in BCS rankings Boise State is playing in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on December 23 against TCU. What?!? Why not in the Cotton Bowl against Texas Tech? Oh yeah predetermined bowl scheduling based on conferences. "No Debates, No Mythical Champion." 24-Team Woodside Bracket now.
